At the beginning of 2022, Gloomy June didn’t exist. But they have smashed onto the scene with the debut of their first EP Popsick.
Originally under the name The Y Axis, the band felt a change was needed away from the logical and techy vibe attached to the name. Instead, Gloomy June is named for the fog that surrounds their hometown of San Francisco. The transition into Gloomy June has brought with it a brilliant shift in musical tone, which is celebrated with this new release.
The five song EP Popsick is an interesting combination of rock, funk, and pop, described as “sometimes anthemic, often queer, and always a little tragic.” Opening with Save Anyone, Gloomy June try to balance the wish to save people from suffering with a feeling of powerlessness.
My personal favourite track is Tinderbox Heart which concludes the EP. You can clearly hear the influences of My Chemical Romance and Chvrches in the music. Yet the band delivers a fantastic freshness into the pop rock scene, with a sense of electricity and boldness that is totally encapsulating.
Gloomy June is hitting the road with their month-long tour this summer. With shows across America and a couple of appearances at upcoming festivals, they are showcasing their music and everything that is Gloomy June.
Gloomy June’s debut EP Popsick is available now.
