David Caploe, frontman of the indie rock band HATE DRUGS, presents us with a fresh new solo project BEST DAD. BEST DAD was created throughout David’s time in isolation and quarantine that we all experienced in 2020 during the peak of the pandemic. David has decided so share his work with the world with the release of his debut EP, BEST DAD.
The EP consists of six songs, all of which offer something so unique and interesting. BEST DAD experiments with a wide range of eccentric sounds throughout the entire EP that make it impossible to stop listening. The project starts off strong with the song “4real” which features honest and vulnerable lyrics from BEST DAD that are backed by a catchy beat. It’s a vibrant track that displays lots of electronic influence. The following track, “Buh Bye,” is nothing short of groovy and is accompanied by instrumentals that have such a unique grit to them. The song also has a way of really immersing you into it through BEST DAD’s use of unique and layered backing instrumentals. The third song off the EP, “Miss American Day Dream" has a vibrant music video to accompany it. Filmed and edited by Jon Nack, the video offers a vintage take on the production that we commonly see today. It’s full of unique and creative editing and showcases effects that are sure to grab your attention. There are certain shots that appear as if they are straight out of an early 2000s movie, which give the video a nostalgic feel. The EP then flows seamlessly into the latter half. “Right Thing*” swells with an addictive up-beat tempo. The track is infused with bouncy 80s-esque instrumentals and backing sounds that give the song such
a crisp feel. Perhaps my favorite song off the EP, “Biting my Tongue,” begins with a dreamy intro that feels as if it could transport you straight into outer space. The one word that comes to mind while describing the track is “intergalactic.” If there were a song that plays in the background of your dreams, this would be it. BEST DAD invites us to listen to all of the thoughts running through his head with lyrics like “give me a chance to show you that I want it more than anything.” The project concludes with “I miss the feeling that things could last,” which is a song about thinking of what could have been and missing the simple things. BEST DAD displays a sense of longing and reminiscing with lines like “I miss the way we used to
brush our teeth” and “I miss your parents and I miss your dogs.” The song’s melancholic guitar sequences and lyrics that dwell on the past perfectly tie the EP together.
BEST DAD has crafted a compelling debut EP that is hard to ignore. The production of BEST DAD EP is impressive and there is something so fresh and distinctive about it. Through just his debut EP, BEST DAD proves that there is no doubt that he has found his sound, and it is
certainly an addictive one at that.
